I have a Type 3 Imbel receiver that I was thinking about having modified to look like the Type 2 for a STG58 kit that I'm getting ready to build. Are there any gunsmiths out there still doing this, and anybody know roughly what it might cost?
Not sure, but you can try contacting Dean to see if he still does it:
Walnut Creek Armory LLC
226 Laughter Rd
Mill Spring NC 28756
You can also try Randy Kline, email@example.com (he's in Jacksonville TX.) He's great with FALs, but I don't know if he does lightening cuts. I think that doing them is difficult and time consuming, so it costs more in labor than it would just to buy a new receiver.
Thanks, I'll try both of them.
Gunplumber used to do it, but this was the last I read about it from him:
"I have machined the easiest (Brit) cuts onto IMBELs, but it was on my manual machine, for my own entertainment. It is not something I offer. I could not charge enough to cover the risk."
I get the impression that the possibility of damaging/defacing the receiver is enough of a problem that many gunsmiths won't do it. I would just look for a Type 2 receiver for sale, pretty much Coonan or DSA if you are looking for new:
Yeah, both the DSA and the Coonan can potentially have problems, but at least they can be sent back if anything comes up.
I would buy a DSA before I bought a Coonan, but barely.
